Base Gai probably would be weaker than Kakashi.

Although Gai is faster, his moves are picked up by Kakashi via sharingan and also copied by Kakashi via sharinga. Kakashi also carries that huge arsenal of techniques with shown knowledge of unlocking the first gate.

As far as raw strength, I don't know who's better.

Here's The Problem:
The term powerful retains to someones strength or destructive capabilities..
Yes Gai is more powerful than Kakashi
But Kakashi is a more "well-rounded" ninja than Gai by a far..
Within terms of brains Kakashi is a observer over Gais straight forward outlooks..Which by terms of a shinobi is a higher value..
Now if your asking could Gai beat Kakashi?..
Idont know..
By feats alone: Kakashis Kumai is a technique that can't be overpower by Gais means.. and Gais 8thGate doesn't have worthy feats too propose its value..
Soo we don't know if it could be used properly to beat Kakashi..
Soo its very hard to say..
By feats in there Rivalry tho I think Kakashi is of 52 over gais 51?..
Due to Kakashis win in the filler "Race around Konoha"

I think what people seem to forget is that Kakashi is a little of every ninja in the Anime, for the fact that he has the sharingan & he know the Strengths and Weaknesses of most Techniques. Remember, In Part one of the Series, Kakashi knew 3 of the 8 gates even though he doesnt train as much as Guy & Lee.

He was a Jonin at 10, Learned Many moves, Created one of the strongest techs in the series, Almost/outsmarted some of the Strongest in the series (Pein, Itachi, Guy, Kakuzu etc) & most of all makes looking at Porn cool.

And im not Saying Guy isnt cool, But lets be honest, If it wasnt for the 8 gates, You guys would Still look at guy and a Gay Jackass

Mad this same thread awhile back, guy beats kakashi but if they had multiple fights kakashi would win most because he would eventually come up with strategies to beat him.

I'd have to say they are pretty even, obviously strength Gai is stronger, but Kakashi has proven his skill to be just as effective.

Gai is probably stronger since he has the eight gates and abilities like afternoon tiger. However Kakashi is smarter, and although he lacks in abilities, we haven't really seem him fight that much. We know he has raikiri and kamui, as well as some skill with the eight gates but other than that, his abilities are a mystery. I think there's much more to Kakashi, we just haven't seen it yet.
I'd say they are evenly matched, but it would depend on the circumstances if they fought.
