Jiraiya was one of the Legendary Sannin along with Tsunade and Orochimaru. Trained by the Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen. Jiraiya, along with Tsunade and Orochimaru, fought and defeated Hanzo of the Rain Village. Hanzo gave the three the name "The Legendary Sannin". During his travels, Jiraiya was told a prophecy concerning him and his students, which states that they will decide the fate of the world. After the battle with Hanzo, Jiraiya encountered three orphans from Amegakure; Konan, Yahiko, and Nagato. While Orochimaru suggested they kill them to spare them the cruelty of the world, Jiraiya decided to look after them for a time and taught them Ninjutsu before leaving them so that they could pursue their own goals. Once Jiraiya reached the status of Jonin, he was given his own Genin team which included Minato Namikaze and two other unknown Genin. Soon after this, Orochimaru defected and Jiraiya left Konoha to follow his movements. Orochimaru joined Akatsuki. Following Orochimaru, Jiraiya becamed well informed on the movements of Akatsuki. Doing this, Jiraiya gave up his chance to become the next Hokage forcing the Thrid Hokage to pick another. Soon after this, Jiraiya finished his first book, which failed. Although, Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki read the book and agreed to name their first born son, Naruto, the main character in the book. They also named Jiraiya their son's Godfather. Jiraiya ends up training Naruto before the Chunnin Exams. After Naruto fails to retrieve Sasuke, Jiraiya offers to take him on a three year trip to train under him. After the three years, Jiraiya and Naruto head back to Konoha. Jiraiya leaves again to gain more information on Akatsuki. After finding out and informing Tsunade where the leader of Akatsuki was. Jiraiya encountered the Akatsuki leader. After fighting with Pain for some time, he claimed to have discovered his true identity. However, Pain's thorn-headed body was able to attack Jiraiya by surprise, allowing Pain's other bodies to thrust their four black blades into his stomach. He forced himself back to life with willpower, and transfered the information about Pain to one of his toads. He believed that Naruto was the child of prophecy he heard in a prediction by the Toad Sage. As Jiraiya's toad escaped to Konoha, Jiraiya sunk to the watery depths of the battlefield. His death was later confirmed by Fukasaku.
