A DISGUSTED medic told today how he saw his colleague eat a piece of celery - as they treated a dying man. A medic also tryed to fry a prawn on the dying mans chin.
Darren Claydon says he witnessed paramedic – Clive Greedy – eating as they gave treatment to a man who had collapsed on his kitchen floor.
Mr Claydon told a hearing of the Health Professions Council (HPC) in London: “My attention was called to Clive Greedy, by him saying 'Nice celery’.
“He was holding a piece of celery, with bite marks, and a piece missing from it. It appeared to me he had been eating the celery. I saw him chewing.”
Nicola Hill, for the HPC, said that on Easter Sunday 2006, the man and his wife were preparing to entertain friends when the wife - known only as MG - heard him collapse in the kitchen.
She gave a statement saying that they had been preparing prawn cocktail starters and there had been salad items on the kitchen sideboard.
Mr Claydon, an emergency care practitioner, was first on the scene, followed by Greedy, and John Jones, an ambulance technician.
She said at one point – as the medics attempted to resuscitate the man with shocks from a defibrillator – a prawn was placed on the patient’s chin by Jones, who made the comment, ’let’s see if we can cook this prawn’.
Jones was dismissed following the incident, while Greedy, after first being given only a formal verbal warning, was also dismissed.
The wife, who had left the room to let them treat her husband, added: “At one point I could hear laughing and a comment made by one of the paramedics about having a cup of tea."
Her husband was taken to hospital, and died later that day.
When the wife was told that there was an investigation into whether Greedy had been eating, she said: “I was disgusted to learn of Clive Greedy’s conduct. I could not believe any individual would act in such a manner.”
