Viz-owned animated series to bow in October

SAN DIEGO -- Disney has struck a deal with Viz Media to bring the anime series "Naruto Shippuden" to the Disney XD network beginning next month.

"Shippuden" is the sequel to the popular Japanese import and picks up with the ninja lead characters now in their teens. The original "Naruto" series has been airing on Cartoon Network since 2005.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Disney,” Bill Germain, media director of programming sales at the San Francisco-based animation and licensing company. “We know Disney XD has been tracking really well since it launched in February and we think our top brand matches well with that audience.”

While it may be new to the Disney audience, Naruto has already proven to be a strong license in gaming and online. Subtitled episodes of "Shippuden" were among the top streams on both Hulu and Joost earlier this year.

“Disney XD is a growing destination for our key demographic, boys 6-14, and we're looking forward to bringing the adventures of 'Naruto Shippuden' to our lineup," said Tracy McAndrew, director, acquisitions and co-productions, Disney-ABC Cable Networks Group.

Laura Yoshioka, director of consumer software for Tomy, which owns the "Naruto" game rights for all Nintendo platforms, said, “'Naruto' has always had a large installed base so the games did well even without a TV series for support."

But with Tomy releasing two new titles in the series, including the Nintendo DS game "Naruto Shippuden: Ninja Destiny 2" next week, Yoshioka suggested the new TV deal could end up broadening the audience for the video games as well. “Having Disney as the broadcast partner we feel really pushes the brand to the next level,” she added.

Well it seems on different Naruto sites, some Naruto fans are glad, only because they finally get to see Shippuden aired on US television.

I hate to see how they handle Sasuke vs. Orochimaru or Sakura/Chiyo vs. Sasori.
Or when Deidara get's punched continually in the face by semi Kyuubi Naruto (or was it a Deidara clay clone, lol I forgot). Alot of blood and violence happened during that little scene.

Disney is grabbing some hot properties. First all of Marvel's collection of heroes and now Naruto! They're on a roll!

I'm not up-to-date with what's up with Disney XD, but if it's a channel with the same viewership as Disney Channel, then this is an EXCELLENT MOVE! Even if they make some edits to the show it's still an EXCELLENT MOVE!

Why? Because this re-captures the 6-14 crowd. Most kids don't have the knowledge to find new, great programing in on the Internet. They rely on television, and Disney is a channel most parents approve of. This potentially added viewership on TV adds to the already huge Naruto fan base, which in turn will lead to more Naruto merchandise being created and sold (we all know the power of kids and their desires for toys. Most parents can't say no!). This will make Viz Media happy, Shueisha happy, and us happy to see our favorite ninja being propelled to the top!

I'm sure you guys, as I read in all of the previous posts, are going to be like "ohh wahhhh *cryyy* Naruto is ruined!" It's definitley not ruined as we, the true fans, are still getting our beloved show in it's true uncut, Japanese format on a weekly basis. We have no reason to complain. Only rejoice that there is now a television outlet for Naruto!

Dubbed uncut is still available on DVD and on Ipod (and I'm sure somebody will upload them online, lol) even if Disney decides to edit it. We have multiple outlets to watch, and in different formats so a bunch of audiences are being captured. For the series as a whole this is the best possible move - beeeelieve it!

Naruto aired on Jetix in the UK I believe, so this is really no surprise to me...

At least it's not airing on the regular Cartoon Network (admit it, CN is starting to fail). Although Adult Swim would have been the best choice overall...

At first I thought this was a joke, but to know that they would put Naruto Shippuden on Disney really makes no sense, but I see after Saiyan's explanation; its about the money.

VIZ is going broke it seems, and they had to find somewhere that would gain them money to put the show on. Kids can't watch Adult Swim, not with strict parenting that is, so putting on Disney Channel will get more profit in the long run from kids it seems.

But for true Naruto fans wanting to hear the English Dub, they will be a little disappointed. Honestly I have NO idea how they will simply even introduce Hidan as a bloody killer thats in a cult. There going to have to cut so many things out of this show, that it wont even be funny. I wouldn't be surprised if they cut whole scenes- or even entire episodes.

Saying Disney is for little people, they said the same thing for the Wii, but every age group is enjoying that. Parents and older siblings should watch some of the shows they show on Disney XD. Yeah, but that was rated PG-13. Toon Disney (according to one of the posts on here) is for viewers 6-14, so that's basically PG or G. Heck the first dubbed episode even says "Hell" when Naruto's looking for Sasuke. Can they really put that on Toon Disney?

If the censoring is as bad as it's claimed to be, then the only difference between Shippuden by Viz and Shippuden by 4Kids would be better voice acting by Viz.

If some of you guys notice, Naruto Shippuden does aired in phipplines on the ABC network/ABS-CBN. Which sometime ago Disney own part of ABC network. So they actual do have the rights to aired Naruto Shippuden here in the US on the Disney XD channel, like they do every thursday on ABS-CBN over there in Phipplines area.

I think we all need to watch the first episode that comes out, and compare it to the original japanese version (might need subs for the words lol) to see the extent of the censoring and editing. If its really big, then we need a majority movement to stop the censoring. Have everyone you know stop watching and start writing to Disney XD that it is unacceptable and needs to be changed. But only if the censoring is too much for us to live with.

By the way, when does it start?? Because I really don't want to miss it. I keep looking it up everyday but all I can come up with is "in October" lol. Not very helpful.

Well, it's good for me. It'll be the only way i'll be able to watch Shipuden, for that, i'm grateful. However, they better not **** it up, i'll have to go a little crazy on their ass if they do.

lol. Wow. I never heard of this news before. I didn't know that they're airing Naruto Shippuden on that channel. I mean, Disney? Isn't Disney suppose to be the channel for kids? I haven't seen an episode where they have chasing and a few bits of violence. I believe in Cartoon Network more since they have Tom and Jerry with the pounding of a hammer and smashing into things, but Disney? Never expected this, but I might watch it. If it doesn't seem good, then I'll just continue to watch the Japanese version online.

If they cancel it, I won't be able to watch Shipuden until the box sets come out. Due to my shitty internet service, i'm unable to watch Shipuden online. Shipuden coming on tv, even though it's Disney, is a good thing for me.

I just finished watching it when it came on alittle while ago... It wasn't bad, but I prefer the subbed version of course... Haha, did anyone notice the whole "cutey jutsu" thing? WTF? Cutey jutsu? lol...

I think they skipped the scene when Naruto compared his height to his past self... :(

It took me some time to get use to a couple of the dubbed voices... Most of them sound the same, but Konohamaru's was different... I think now that Shikamaru is older, his dub voice fits him much better... Same goes for Temari...

I'm glad the show wasn't very butchered, and it's now airing on tv, so it's all good with me... :D

I'm not going to faithfully watch it every Wednesday, but I will watch the episodes from time to time...

You notice how the dialogue and violence got my graphic towards the end of the night. I think they are going to start off easy like CN did. I mean in the first episode they censored out Sasuke pulling his sword out to stab Naruto but later they show people with kunai's in them, holes, and blood. So I think they might start to let it get more and more graphic as it progresses.

Seems like Disney is a little more lenient on their editing, then cartoonetwork. I expected the 9 tailed fox to be edited in a less creepy way, and for all the violence with crappy vioce overs, or edited to make it look less harmful.

The episodes weren't that bad except some episodes were a little rough around the edges and needed improvement...

I really liked it overall. I mean, the censoring could have been worse. My friends and I were all braced for the worsed lol. But I was pleased with how it turned out. Hopefully they will loosen up the censoring a bit as time progresses.
