Senjutsu: Sage/Hermit techniques. Only ones possessing a high amount of chakra can utilise senjutsu. The user is required to gather natural energy, and balance it equally with chakra, and the physical energy. Too much natural energy, and the user will turn into a frog. Too little, and the technique/s will fail. The user must remain perfectly still while gathering natural energy, although Naruto is/was training to move and gather natural energy.
Sage Mode: To initiate Sage Mode, the user must gather enough Natural Energy in order to activate Sage Mode and carry out Senjutsu. To do this, the user must remain perfectly still, and once activated, the senjutsu chakra replaces the user's chakra as the main chakra source, for the duration of Sage Mode. But use of high-level techqniques during Sage Mode drains the senjutsu chakra at a much higher rate than average chakra. Signs of mastery of Sage Mode are as Fukasaku said the "toad eyes" are always present in hermit mode being the sign of a true hermit; red rings around the eyes and yellow iris and slitted horizontal pupil.
