Ranks:
So below are your ranks based on reputation. In the parenthesis is the amount of reputation you need to get to that level. When you first registered, you started with 10 reputation points, so you would have the reputation rank of "is on a distinguished road". If people positive rep you, you will climb up in the rankings. If people negative rep. you, you will fall. You can read the full explanation of ranks at the link above.

Rep needs to be used to represent the better users on the forums. And it's an easy way to tell if someone's a good friend or not.
